Understanding Pediatric Eye Care

Having a regular family eye doctor will make it easier to monitor your children’s vision and care for their eye health. At Sohi Eye Care, we offer pediatric vision screenings and eye exams at different stages of your child’s life to ensure there are no problems with his sight. If problems are detected in your child's vision, we provide children’s eyewear and contact lens to improve sight.

Pediatric eye care can begin as early as 6 months of age with an infant eye exam. From there, we recommend your child has an eye exam when he is 3 years old and again at 5 years of age, when he starts school. If your child has good vision, he can have exams every two years from that point on. If he shows signs of vision problems, we recommend you bring him in for annual eye checkups so we can monitor his eye health.

What’s Involved in a Pediatric Eye Exam?

During a pediatric eye exam, your doctor will check your child’s visual acuity and eye health to see if he shows signs of any eye conditions or diseases. We’ll test your child for refractive errors that can impair his sight and look for conditions like lazy eye and crossed eyes that may run in your family. Your pediatric eye doctor will also test your child’s eye focus, tracking, and teaming.

Importance of Pediatric Eye Care

Routine eye care is particularly important for children as their eyes are still developing. By catching eye health problems early on, your family eye doctor can prevent vision loss later down the line. Early detection and treatment of pediatric eye problems can improve your child’s vision as he grows into adulthood.

Good vision is also important in your child’s formative years as vision plays an important role in learning. Correcting vision problems can help your child do better in school and protect him from accidents.
